Building a Reliable Common Identity towards a Global Urban Sustainable Development in the Atlantic

Coastal cities face growing challenges from urban pressures, and current approaches often fail to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, resilience, and social equity. By strengthening the land-sea relationship and cooperation, the project enables territories to responsibly capitalise on coastal resources by fostering dialogue among partners, advancing a Unified Atlantic Space, facilitating knowledge-sharing, and improving port-city integration, urban regeneration, sustainable tourism, and the blue economy.
ATLANTIC BRIDGES project will be co-funded by Interreg Atlantic Areas under the Blue and Green Environment (€1.43m). The 3-year project will explore coastal cities face growing challenges from urban pressures, and current approaches often fail to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, resilience, and social equity.
The ATLANTIC BRIDGES project promotes sustainable urban development by integrating the sea into urban planning. Focusing on the triple transition and based on three working groups (ecological, economic, and social), the initiative embraces the New European Bauhaus philosophy to create resilient and sustainable territories.
Action plans and tailored strategies will be tested in five different Atlantic regions: Galicia (Spain), North-West Ireland, Le Havre in Normandie and Les Sables d’Olonne in Pays-de-la-Loire, and Figueira da Foz in Centro Region (Portugal).
